NANJING STORY

Traditional Jiangsu cuisine fit for an emperor finds a home in Melbourne’s Chinatown

Nanjing’s food scene is befitting to its distinguished history and this traditional cuisine is now available in Melbourne.

Introducing Nanjing Story!

Open as of January 2020, Nanjing Story is the newest addition to Melbourne’s vibrant, convenient and culturally rich Chinatown.

With a menu full of delicious cheap eats and dishes for intrepid and “less-intrepid” diners, Nanjing Story’s fresh and flavourful menu will be enjoyed by all.

A traditional but quirky dessert menu includes soft and chewy, sticky rice balls in soup and corn pudding. Take your pick between two classic flavours - red bean soup or fermented rice soup ($6.80).

Feast on juicy steamed Xiao Long Bao soup dumplings, with pork, beef and chive options (from $11.80); or delicious steamed or fried pork, chicken, or vegetarian dumplings with fresh herbs and seasonal vegetables (from $5.80).

Nanjing Story’s menu also has a range of unusual plates such as preserved egg with tofu and dried meat floss ($11.80), the famous Nanjing style salted duck and Huaiyang style sautéed fish in rice wine sauce ($21.80). Or if you’re feeling brave, slurp on a steaming hot duck blood and vermicelli soup with fried tofu, duck liver and gizzard ($12.80).

Delicious vegetarian options include vegetable and tofu noodle soup, stir fried Chinese kale, lightly fried tofu bites paired with house made sweet chilli sauce ($18.80) and steamed zucchini and egg dumplings from ($5.80).

Mix and matching with friends is strongly encouraged to create your very own Nanjing style banquet!

Nanjing style, also known as Jiangsu cuisine, is famous for strict sourcing of specific seasonal ingredients and is steeped in elaborate cooking techniques, ingenious and delicate hand folded shapes and vibrant colours, fundamental elements that Nanjing Story owner, Vivian Yang is proud to share with diners.

Nanjing Story owner, Vivian Yang says:

There’s a real sense of pride in presentation in traditional Nanjing cooking. I have such fond memories of folding dumplings with my family as a child. It’s this love for food and family that we wanted to bring to the menu of Nanjing Story.”

Delivering delicious snacks and larger plates that are perfect for sharing, Nanjing Story treats Melburnians to affordable, signature Jingsu dishes that you must not miss!

Nanjing is my hometown and I feel fortunate to inherit the food practices and centuries old techniques from my family. Food is such an integral part to any cultural tradition and there are so many different kinds of Chinese cuisine that change as you move from province to province. We are really excited to share a part of the Nanjing story and it’s unique, Eastern flavours with Melbourne.”

Owner Vivian Yang’s family has owned a successful and popular catering group in China for 20 years, and so when she moved to Australia it was only natural that Yang open a restaurant with the same fresh delicious and traditional food of Nanjing.

The food of Nanjing

Rich with history and packed with flavour, Nanjing, capital of the Jiangsu providence, was once the nation’s capital during the Ming dynasty, and remains home to one of the eight most influential and distinguished culinary traditions of Chinese cuisine.

While the emperors are now gone, the local flavours of Nanjing prevail as fit for royalty, with their perfect petit eats and street side snacks that have attracted the food obsessed nation and visitors for thousands of years.
