Tradies Could Gain Extra Qualifications for Little Extra Work

Many trade operators run their own business, often wearing multiple hats. They manage everything from marketing and human resources to finances, accounting software, and all manner of other essential operational behind-the-scenes tasks. They have all of these skills, but no formal certification to show for it. And running a busy contracting business means they have no time to complete a certificate-level course. Recognition of prior learning through a
registered training organisation (RTO) could be the very thing tradies need to fast track their way to a formal business qualification.

What is Recognition of Prior Learning?

Essentially, recognition of prior learning is receiving recognition for the study you have completed or the skills you’ve gained in the workplace. More formally, it’s a process that assesses your competency to determine if you meet the requirements for a unit of study. To apply, you need to contact the RTO offering the course you’re interested in. They’ll then complete the assessment needed to determine whether you qualify. Usually, this involves submitting evidence that you have the skills you need.

What Kind of Evidence Will I Need?

The Australian Skills Quality Authority states that you will need to supply some or all of the following:

  • Records of any completed training
  • Any assessment items or records
  • Declarations from your employer
  • A copy of your student records

If you are self-employed or have not had any prior study, you will need evidence of your experience and skills. This can include:

  • A portfolio of work samples
  • A detailed statement that describes any experience you have in the industry
  • Documentation of your work history
  • References from clients

Through an RTO, online certificates and courses can turn your skills and experience into an accredited qualification.

What Are the Benefits of Recognition of Prior Learning?

There are so many benefits from undergoing this process. You’ll save so much time and money that you may otherwise spend on courses and certifications. You’ll improve your overall job security by confirming for your clients that you have the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed. You’ll also ensure that any skills and expertise you have are in line with the current industry standards. It’s a no brainer.
