5 Mistakes When Using a Fishing Rod and Combo

  • Written by Carmel Issac

When it comes to fishing, much of the enjoyment and success of the activity can be traced to the type and quality of equipment used. Often, people who are new to the world of fishing tend to compromise the experience by not paying enough attention to the compatibility and flexibility of their fishing gears.

The most widely recognised equipment used in catching fishes is a fishing rod and combo. Fishing rods and reels create the perfect combinations for different types of fishing—whether it is about fishing in saltwater, catching large fishes, or luring fishes in the deep sea.

The wrong choice of rod and reel will throw off your balance and composure when casting or luring fishes. At the same time, using an inappropriate tool may be disrupting the flexibility and quality of your equipment.

There are five ways that you are making the wrong choices for your fishing gear, and these are:

  • Using regular fishing rods for saltwater fishing

Saltwater fishing is a large-scale type of fishing. It mainly involves catching or luring fishes in large bodies of water like the sea or the ocean. There are fishing rods built to withstand the harsh and destructive waves of saltwater. Saltwater fishing rods are tougher and more heavy-duty and can resist corrosion brought by exposure to salty water.

  • Not understanding the significance and purpose of a rod’s strength and weight

If you are not familiar with the uses of each rod based on its weight and the capacity of force that it can bear, you might end up destroying or breaking your fishing equipment. Lighter and shorter rods are suitable for small fishes and bodies of water that are still and do not have strong currents. Heavier and lengthier rods are better used for catching bigger fishes and are also more appropriate for those who are more experienced in fishing. Extremely light rods are great for testing and even for small and almost weightless baits. If a rod is bordering on medium and heavy, it is universally used because it can be adjusted for easy and light fishing to more exhausting variants.

  • Choosing fishing rod materials randomly

As mentioned above, every variant of fishing rods and reels are created for a specific purpose. The next time you head to your local fishing equipment shop, pay attention to the types of material used for each fishing rod. A carbon-fibre rod is not heavy yet is also tough and strong. However, it tends to cost more, and some rip-offs that will make you not get your money’s worth. Fibreglass rods are also very tough and so are graphite rods. Both rods are less expensive and are commonly sold at affordable prices.

  • Pairing the wrong fishing rods and reels

The best way to determine the best fishing rod and combo that works for you is to assess the amount of experience and knowledge you have about fishing. If you are a beginner, you can settle for the most basic combinations first or use the easiest type of rod, such as the spinning rod. But, if you have a bit more of an experience, you can play around with different combinations with bigger and lengthier rods or more advanced types of reels.

Understanding what equipment you need to use and when to use it during fishing allows you to expand your capabilities and skills more. Using the correct type of fishing gears also makes it safer for you to try on more challenging forms of fishing.
